ESC Cardio-Oncology 2026 will take place in Vienna on June 19th,-20th. This is our second Nordic webinar on this topic, last years webinar resulted also in an article published by the contributors in “Cardiology” (Karger)
Professor Dan Atar, Oslo University Hospital (OUS) Ullevål, has previously served as Vice-President of the ESC and is currently acting as Chair of the European Heart Academy (ESC) and the FESC Task Force. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Cardiology".
Program:
15:30-15:40 Prof. Dan Atar, Introduction
15:40-16:00 Cardiovascular Risks in Cancer Patients: An Exposé of Legacy and Emerging Therapies
Dr. Agneta Månsson-Broberg, Associate Professor and Senior Consultant in Cardiology at Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet, Sweden and Chair of Working Group for Cardio-Oncology of the Swedish Society of Cardiology
Description:
A comprehensive overview of the evolving cardio-oncology landscape. This session explores the dual challenge of managing "legacy" cardiotoxicity from traditional treatments, such as anthracyclines and HER2-targeted therapies, alongside the complex cardiovascular complications arising from modern innovations like immune checkpoint inhibitors and targeted TKIs. Dr. Månsson- Broberg will synthesize findings from clinical research to provide a roadmap for risk stratification and cardioprotective strategies in the modern era of oncology.
16:00-16:20 Cardiovascular Challenges in the Era of Intensified Prostate Cancer Treatment
Professor Michael Borre, Department of Clinical Medicine & Urology, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark
Description:
Professor Michael Borre explores the intricate link between cardiovascular health and prostate cancer treatment. This session addresses how pre-existing cardiovascular conditions influence treatment decisions and patient outcomes.
16:20-16:40 Shared Challenges in Cardio-Hematology: Optimizing Management of the Bloodcancer Patient
Dr. Mattias Mattsson MD PhD, Senior Consultant in Hematology at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden (digital participation)
Description:
Building on the principles of risk stratification, this session focuses on the complex clinical tightrope walk in cardio-hematology. Hematological malignancies today often require treatments with potential cardiovascular risk—ranging from the use of anthracyclines to modern proteasome inhibitors and tyrosine kinase inhibitors including BTK-inhibitors. Dr. Mattsson will address the practical challenges of balancing thrombotic versus bleeding risks, managing cardiotoxicity in vulnerable patients, and discuss multidisciplinary collaboration between hematologists and cardiologists to optimize both oncological and cardiovascular outcomes.
16:40-17:00 Panel discussion, short summary / Q&A
