The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a permanent position as a Professorship/Associate Professorship in medicine (Preventive Medicine).

Subject area and description of the area of responsibility for the position

In collaboration with the Department’s other academic staff, the person holding the position is responsible for teaching, supervision of students and performing research in the discipline of Preventive Medicine. One is also obliged to take part in administrative duties at the Department.

 

Specific requirements/responsibilities

The person holding the position will have be involved in developing the curriculum of Preventive Medicine in the Medical Studies, and in Master’s programs (Master of Public Health, Master of Global Health and Clinical Nursing). The successful candidate will have the responsibility for health promotion and prevention in the Medical Studies.

 

Qualifications                                                                                                                                                            
To be eligible for appointment as a professor, an academic level conforming to established national standards is required. Further requirements are documentation of practical teaching competence based on education or on teaching and supervision, documentation of dissemination of knowledge and research, and documentation of education and experience in administration and management.

 

A requirement for appointment as an associate professor is a doctoral degree (PhD) in the subject area concerned or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality. A further requirement is documentation of relevant practical competence in teaching based on education or on teaching and supervision.

 

Applicants not qualified for a professorship can be appointed to the position of associate professor. In accordance with the Appointment Regulations and promotion to teaching and research positions of 9 February 2006, issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, an associate professor may apply for personal promotion to full professor.

 

The successful candidate must be able to document extensive professional and clinical qualifications as well as scientific expertise in one or more aspects of the discipline for which this position is responsible for.

 

Applicants will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • The ability to initiate and lead research and teaching
  • Teaching skills 
  • Quality and breadth
  • Personal aptitude

The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, including qualifications in educational theory and practice, presentation skills in academic work, teaching experience, and other pedagogical background. Please be aware that proof of documentation is required for all of the above.

 

Specific qualification requirements                                                                                                                       

To be eligible for this position, applicants must have a Cand. Med. degree (equivalent to an MBBS or MD). It is preferable, but not a requirement, that the appointee has clinical experience in a relevant field. It is preferred that the candidate hasexperience with applied research within the field of preventive medicine.

 

General information about the post

The person holding the position is obliged to participate in implementation of the teaching programme according to the curricula in effect and in further development of the subject areas and teaching programs, including continuing and further education.

The person holding the post must help to ensure that students develop a global perspective on health and knowledge about global health challenges in their own subject area, and must contribute to cooperation focused on global health challenges in both research and education.

 

The clinical program in medicine at NTNU is based on an integrated academic model in which preclinical, paraclinical and clinical disciplines are coordinated from the first academic year. Teaching takes place partly in small groups, which focuses on clinical cases, In addition the teaching takes form partly as lectures, seminars, laboratory exercises and the students get taught in training laboratories. A great deal of the teaching is in the form of problem-based learning in student groups with university staff as tutors. The person holding the position is obliged to participate as a tutor in such groups.

 

The person appointed must comply with the decisions about changes due to developments in the subject area, and the organizational changes resulting from decisions regarding the university's activities.

The appointment is subject to the conditions in effect at any time for employees in the public sector.

Depending on qualifications and academic background, Professors (in code 1013) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will be remunerated at a minimum of NOK 609 300 per year before tax. Normal wage level is NOK 609 300 – 789 700 of which 2 % is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. Depending on qualifications and academic background, Associated Professors (in code 1011) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will be remunerated at a minimum of NOK 488 900 per year before tax. Normal wage level is NOK 488 900 -621 400 of which 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The successful candidate will be required to complete a course in problem-based learning (PBL) for supervisors. Employees who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved course in teaching at university level within two years of appointment. The University offers such courses.

 

Within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language must demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to Level 3 in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the University.

  • A list of all the applicant`s academic works with information on where they have been published.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify the applicant's contribution to joint works, the applicant must include a brief description of his or her contribution.

 

The most suitable applicants will normally be invited for interview and testing of their teaching skills.
